Product Story

The lotus is the one motif nakshi kantha almost never leaves out — rising, in Bengali folk belief, as a stand-in for purity pulled out of muddy water, and for that reason it usually anchors whatever else gets stitched around it. Here it takes over the whole saree: dozens of hand-worked lotus blooms in yellow, coral, mint, and rose climbing a jet-black Bangalore silk ground, each flower outlined and filled with the same running stitch Bengal's needlewomen have used for roughly five hundred years.

Vertical candy-stripe borders, striped in green, red, gold and sky blue, break the black into panels the way old kantha quilts were often pieced — a structure, not an accident. Colour this loud against a ground this dark is a genuine risk in embroidery, and it only works because every stitch was placed by a hand deciding where the next one belonged, not a machine repeating a file.
